Northumbria University Brings Claude for Education to North East England

We're excited to welcome Northumbria University to Claude for Education. Northumbria University becomes the second university in the UK to partner with Anthropic through Claude for Education and the first to bring Claude for Education to North East England.

Why Northumbria

Northumbria University has built a strong reputation as a leader in responsible AI research and education. The university launched its Centre for Responsible AI in May 2025 and leads a multi-million pound UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in Citizen-Centred Artificial Intelligence, training the next generation of researchers in responsible AI development.

“

The availability of secure and ethical AI tools is a significant consideration for our applicants, and our investment in Claude for Education will position Northumbria as a forward-thinking leader in ethical AI innovation. Empowering students and staff, providing cutting-edge learning opportunities, driving social mobility, and powering an inclusive economy are at the heart of everything we do. We know how important it is to eliminate digital poverty and provide equitable access to the most powerful AI tools, so our students and graduates are AI literate with the skills they need for the workplaces of the future.

Expanding access across the North East

Two-thirds of Northumbria's undergraduate students come from the North East region and go on to work there after graduating. This means the impact of bringing Claude to Northumbria extends well beyond the campus; it contributes to building AI literacy across an entire regional economy.

In the pilot year, Claude for Education licences will be automatically available to all full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students across Northumbria's campuses, providing free universal access regardless of students' financial circumstances.

A student-led AI community

Northumbria is also home to a Claude Builder Club, a student-led community where members explore AI's potential through hackathons, workshops, and collaborative projects. The club has already hosted multiple events, including workshops that brought together students from across the North East's university ecosystem and hackathons open to all disciplines.

Builder Clubs are open to all students regardless of major or technical background, because we believe Claude makes it possible for anyone to build software. At Northumbria, students are already using that access to prototype applications, experiment with emerging AI development workflows, and learn alongside peers who share their curiosity about what's possible.

Looking forward

Northumbria's adoption of Claude for Education represents an important step in our expansion across the UK and beyond. We're working closely with the university to establish the technical infrastructure and training needed to support a campus-wide rollout, and we'll continue partnering with institutions that share our belief that AI integration in education must be led by educators and students themselves.

The opportunity to bring responsible AI tools to more learners across the UK is one we take seriously. We're grateful to Northumbria for their partnership and look forward to learning alongside their community.
